Middle Atlantic Council on Latin American Studies Annual Conference
Latin America and the World: Challenges and Opportunities
College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia
March 6-7, 2009
Latin America has a rich cultural heritage that embraces regions from all around the world. This variety of connections between Latin America and the world echoes in literary works and art, as well as in the increasing number of political and economic agreements among governments and interactions among non-state actors. Besides several benefits, globalization for the region also means new pressures, dislocations due to international trade, and increasing concerns with the impact of transnational issues on national sovereignty, which have all become a main focus of discussion within and outside academia. The 2009 MACLAS conference encourages panel proposals, from faculty, students and practitioners, that advance research focusing on the impact of globalization – broadly understood – on the ecology, natural resources, culture, and politics of Latin America. The program organizers welcome interdisciplinary research with insights from the social sciences and the humanities to explore the interactions between Latin America and the world. Additionally, the organizers will consider a limited number of workshop proposals that aim at informing students and faculty on issues such as study abroad programs in Latin America, academic publishing, the road to tenure, and the use of technology in the classroom.
Please submit a 300-word abstract for individual papers or complete panel proposals in English or Spanish via email (subject heading “MACLAS”) no later than January 1, 2009 to the Program Committee co-chairs as follows:
