Prize and Award Information and Deadlines for MACLAS 2026 at PennWest University, California Campus

MACLAS offers several prizes and grants to members.  Please email your manuscript or proposal to the prize committee chairperson before the deadline.  You can apply for different awards, yet each member can submit only one project per prize per year. Authors under consideration for the Street Prize cannot submit a manuscript for the Davis Prize.

The Harold Eugene Davis Prize: The Davis Prize is awarded each year for the best book chapter or article published in the previous two years by a member in good standing for the past two years. Committee chair: Brian Potter (potter@tcnj.edu) Deadline for submissions: Feb 3, 2026.

The Juan Espadas Prize. The Juan Espadas Prize is given for the best paper submitted to the MACLAS conference by an undergraduate student. Committee chair: Sergio Maldonado (smald016@ucr.edu) Deadline for submissions from the 2026 conference: Sept 1, 2026.

The Władysław Maryan Froelich Research Grant. The Władysław Maryan Froelich Research Grant enables recipients to access special research materials.  Applicants should include a brief description of their project, methodology, and budget. The proposal should be around 2 single-spaced pages. Committee chair: MirnaTrauger (mirnatrauger@muhlenberg.edu) Deadline for submissions: Feb 3, 2026.

The John D. Martz III Prize: The John D. Martz III Prize is given for the best graduate student paper presented at the last conference. Committee chair: Gonzalo Aguiar Malosetti (gonzalo.aguiar@oswego.edu) Deadline for submissions from the 2026 conference: Sept 1, 2026.

The Judy McInnis Distinguished Service Award: The Judy McInnis Distinguished Service This award is granted in recognition of dedicated service to MACLAS.  Committee chair: Gloria B. Clark (gbc3@psu.edu) Deadline for submissions: Feb 3, 2026.

The James Street Prize: This prize is awarded to the author of the best peer-reviewed article published in MARLAS in the past two years.  Do not submit manuscripts for this award.  The MARLAS Editorial Board will nominate the top five articles to be considered by the James Street Prize committee.

The Christina Turner Graduate Student Travel Award: This award up to $250 helps graduate students attend the annual conference. Committee chair: Meghan McInnis-Domínguez (mmd@udel.edu) Deadline for submissions: Feb 3, 2026.

The Arthur P. Whitaker Prize: The Arthur P. Whitaker Prize is awarded for the best book published by a MACLAS member in the past two years.  Authors must have been members of MACLAS for the previous two years to be eligible.  Committee chair: Brian Potter (potter@tcnj.edu) Deadline for submissions: Feb 3, 2026.
